Yes, heroes and henchmen both get their share of the loot.

If the heroes/henchmen are out of range (their names are "greyed-out" in the party window) then they won't steal your drops - apart from the gold, which is always shared.

This is obviously no good to you running with a smite duo (or whatever) but there are several farming builds that involve taking H/H to clear the way to a boss, then flagging them off of the radar when you actually kill the boss.

Yes, they do. You ever bother to read the text above their heads?
I saw this one time:
Dunkoro: "Hey. Hey Takhora. Next ecto that drops, you hit that idoit on the head with your staff and I'll steal the ecto."
Tahkora: "Hey. Hey Livia. Next ecto that drops, I'ma hit both that idiot and Dunkoro on the head. You steal the ecto from Dunkoro."

Drops are evenly split among all members of the party, regardless of whether they are human or not. 'Stealing' isn't the right word.

If you watch closely, you can sometimes see the actual drop when a monster dies. For some reason I always notice dye dropping from a monster even if it is reserved for a hero or hench. Unless it actually hits the ground it won't make the noise, but you can see the item before it hits the ground. Once it hits the ground it is 'reserved' for a person on the team. If that person is a hero or hench, the item is automatically picked up by them and you never see it. Some items, however, have an easy to recognize icon (like dye) and you can see the item falling when the monster dies.

This is true. Although I hate it when I can't tell if it was a brown or black dye.

They don't steal the drops - they earn them fair and square

You know I always thought that with the amount of loot they have gotten along the way the H/H would have bought some L33T armor and weapons by now instead of wanting me to find upgrades for them.. They are such tigt arse cheapskates.

I think you should be able to turn on (and off) messages about drops reserved for your heroes/henchmen. I would just love to see what nice stuff that Koss or Jora are pocketing, even if you will never have access to it.

Could help tremendously with drop rate research as well...
